Quotes and Comments
(email your tribute to Don Odom to danny@ghs1961.org)
eugene r SHORT johnson: We will miss you Friend Teacher American Oklahoman Statesman by all rights Stood as tall as any
man in my sight You chose to teach and teach you did Of book, but more of life and to always be good I can only hope to be a
man and be as good as you and for the things you stood Your reward awaits when God will say WELL DONE MY SON YOU MAY
ENTER AND BY HIM YOU STOOD
Sherry Canning: Mr. Odom was still going strong in his Video Ministry at our church just a few weeks ago even though he had been
through rough times with his health. He was like the "Energizer Bunny" and will be greatly missed. His service was attended by
about 11 of us from his Freshman class of 1958 (that we know of) and the church was full of people whose lives he had touched. I
will miss his smile and compliments that he always shared.
JD Metcalf: I would say end to an era but that wouldn't do his life justice at all. Touched a lot of folks from that little classroom at
Fogarty Jr. High School...Just look at your SS card, you know that he was the one who made you get one. At the time maybe we
didn't appreciate the wire recorder of those major times in history...Good bye Mr. Odom.
Gene Burkett: I really hate to loose Don. I still remember when the wire broke on his wire recording of “Amos and Andy’s
Christmas Program” just as it started to play and tears came to his eyes and mine to. I was so disappointed. He had played that
show to every class he had for years. Don was really a “Sole Man”.
Danny Murphy: In the 9th grade, Don took us to KWRW Radio studios in the Ione Hotel to read a radio drama on the air. After the
show, he called me "Mush-mouth." This critique stayed with me when I went to work for the station after graduation, and it helped
me by making me aware of the importance of pronouncing words more clearly and distinctly on the air.
Col. Ward: Don was a basketball referee. At half-time he would stand in the middle of the court with his back to the goal and launch
shots over his head that often went in.
Charlotte A Dively: Don was my neighbor all through my childhood - a wonderful man and family. I'm very sad to hear of his passing.
He will be so missed.
Keith Gleason: Sorry to hear that we lost "Kickapoo". His Oklahoma history class was the ONLY history course I've ever taken that I
actually enjoyed. And I will never forget the "risque" (for the time) joke that he dared to tell in class, about the Indian who drank sooo
much tea the night before (brought in by the white traders), that sadly, they found him the next morning, drowned in his own tea-pee.
James (Jimmy) Crenshaw: Don Odom was indeed a very fine man his gentile spirit will be missed at all of our class functions.
Gerry McKee: I remember lively good natured kidding from Mr. Odom about being from Texas and him taking the Oklahoma side.
Once I remember retorting" at least we whipped the Mexicans rather than stealing our state from some drunken Indians ."He loved it.
I realized all the time his kidding came from the purest of reasons and were all well intended. You all remember his lessons on
social responsibility. He also had us fill out our social security card applications and the moral reasons for the program. I think of
him every time I write down or tell my number to someone and always will. I loved Mr. Don Odom and will miss him dearly. My regret
that I can't be there to bid him goodbye is filling my eyes with tears. Guthrie has lost an angel and the proof of that rests on everyone
of us. My best to all and I will find a quiet place at two to be with you all in spirit. --Gerry
